Volleyball guide

Keep volleyball score from the stands. Family and friends watch live.

For the parent with the phone at the match. You tap a team's half for every rally. Grandparents, parents stuck at work and anyone who couldn't make it follow every point from one link, with nothing to install.

No account needed. Set up a match in about 30 seconds.

In 30 seconds

Reading this in the stands with the first serve coming? This is all you need.

  1. Pick volleyball, name the teams Tap Create an event, then Volleyball. Type both team names and tap Save & get the link.
  2. Text the link to family Text the link opens your phone's share sheet with the message ready. Send it to the family group chat.
  3. Tap the team that won each rally Tap anywhere on their half of the screen. The app asks before it ends a set.

Step by step

From setup to the final score, in the order you'll meet each screen. Words in bold are exactly what the buttons say.

  1. Set up the match

Open gamedayscore.live and tap Create an event, then Volleyball. Type the home and away team names and pick a color for each.

Choose Best of 3 or Best of 5. Sets go to 25 and the deciding set to 15; if your league plays something different, change them with − and +. Then tap Save & get the link.

Setting up needs a signal, so do it in the parking lot if the gym is a dead zone. Scoring works without one.

Setting up the match: team names Home Team and Away Team, team colours, best of 5
    Setup: teams, colors, format
  2. Share the link

Text the link opens your phone's share sheet with the message already written. Pick the family group chat and send. Copy puts the link on your clipboard, and the QR code button next to Text the link shows a code that parents sitting near you can scan.

Live score for Home Team vs Away Team volleyball. Keep this open, it updates on its own: gamedayscore.live/e/7QK4M2XT

Further down is Copy my scorer link. That one is for you only: it's how you carry on from another phone (step 9). Then tap Start scoring.

“Anyone with this link can change the score. Send it only to yourself.” Family gets the live page link, never the scorer link.

Sharing the link: the live page link, the message ready to send, and Text the link
Share: Text the link, Copy, QR code
  3. Score each rally

Each team gets half the screen. When a rally ends, tap anywhere on the winning team's half to give them the point. The screen stays on while you score.

Serving moves to whichever team won the last point, and Set point or Match point shows up on its own. The strip under the score keeps every finished set.

Teams changed ends? Open the menu and tap Switch sides on screen, so each team sits where it is on the court. Only your screen changes.

    Tap a team's half
The match menu over the scoring screen: Switch sides on screen, Catch up / edit sets, Share the link again, Back to home and Delete event
    The menu
  4. Fix a mistake

Undo takes back the last point, whichever team got it. Tap it again to keep going back, as far as the start of the set or your last catch up.

Noticed a wrong point a few rallies later? Each team has its own −1 button (it reads “−1 Home Team”). It takes one point off that team and leaves the points after it alone.

The live page follows every fix as soon as it's sent.

Undo The last point, either team
−1 One point off one team, any time in the set
  5. End a set

When a team reaches 25 (15 in the deciding set) and leads by 2, the app stops and asks, for example Set 3 over? Nothing ends until you answer.

Start set 4 confirms it and starts the next set. When that set decides the match, the button reads Finish match. If the last point was a mistake, Not yet, undo last point takes it back.

So a stray tap at 24–23 can't end a set on its own.

The app asks before a set ends: Set to Home Team, 25–22, with a Start set 4 button
    Set over? Confirm or undo
  6. Joined late or missed some points?

Tap Catch up (before the first point it reads Set the score; it's also Catch up / edit sets in the menu). Copy the gym scoreboard in: each finished set's score, the set you're in now and its score. Then tap Save & resume set 4 and keep tapping.

Don't know a set's score? Leave it blank and pick who won it. If the sets you typed already decide the match, the button reads Save as final.

When a catch up adds or changes a finished set, or lowers a score, the live page says Score corrected at 7:31 PM. so the jump doesn't look like a glitch.

Catch up: the score set by set, a pick for the set to resume in, and who won a set with no score
    Catch up, set by set
  7. No signal in the gym

Keep tapping. Every point is saved on your phone first, and the pill at the top counts what's waiting: Offline · 3 to send. The points go out by themselves, in order, as soon as there's a signal.

Meanwhile family's page reads Delayed after 2 minutes without news, then catches up when your points arrive.

Leave the app open until the count is gone. Anything still waiting when you close it is sent the next time you open the app.

    Offline · 3 to send
  8. Match over

After Finish match, the final screen shows the winner and every set, and the live page turns Final for everyone watching as soon as your phone has sent it.

Text the final score sends a one-line recap to anyone who missed it, and Copy copies it:

    Final: Home Team def. Away Team 3–1 (25–21, 23–25, 25–22, 25–19)

New match sets up the next one with the same teams filled in. Back to home goes to your list of matches.

Match over: Home Team wins 3–1, the sets, and the one-line recap to text

  9. Scoring from another phone

Battery dying, or handing over to another parent? Open your scorer link on the other phone with a signal, or paste it into Have a scorer link? Paste it on the app's home screen. The match loads and scoring carries on there.

Your first phone stops scoring and shows Scoring moved to another phone. To score on it again, tap Take over scoring here.

Before you switch, let the first phone send everything: no “to send” count in its pill. Points a phone never sent are dropped when the other phone takes over.

What your family sees

They tap the link and the live page opens in their phone's browser. No app, no sign-in, no refreshing: the score changes by itself.

  • The live page: Home Team 14, Away Team 12 in set 3, sets 1–1, set by set, updated 6 seconds ago

    Live

Sets won, the points in this set, who's serving and every set so far. “Updated 6 seconds ago · 4 watching” shows it's really live.

  • The live page marked Delayed: no update in 4 minutes, the scorer may have lost signal in the gym

    Delayed

After 2 minutes with no news from your phone, the page says so: “The scorer may have lost signal in the gym.” It catches up when you're back.

  • The live page as the final result: Home Team wins 3–1, match ended at 8:14 PM

    Final

The winner, every set and when the match ended. The link keeps working after the match, so latecomers still see the result.

After a catch up that fixed the score, a note reads Score corrected at 7:31 PM. The scorer caught up on missed points and sets.

The rules the app follows

Exactly how the app scores a match, and what it doesn't do yet.

How it scores

  • Rally scoring. Every rally is a point for the team that won it.
  • Best of 3 or best of 5. First team to win 2 sets, or 3.
  • Sets to 25, the deciding set to 15. Change them at setup: 11 to 30 points a set, 5 to 30 for the deciding set.
  • Win by 2, no cap. A set can run to 31–29.
  • A set ends only when you confirm it. The app asks; you answer.
  • The server follows the last point. Whoever won the last rally is serving. At the start of a set, and right after a catch up, nobody is marked until the first point.
  • Set point and match point appear on their own, one point from the set or the match.

Not in volleyball yet

  • Capped sets, where a set stops at a fixed score instead of win by 2.
  • Two-set pool play that can end 1–1.
  • Following one player's kills, aces or blocks.
  • Changing the score after Finish match. Fix sets with Catch up before the last set is confirmed.

Questions parents ask

Does my family need an app or an account?

No. They tap the link and the live page opens in their phone's browser: no app, no sign-in. You don't need an account to keep score either. Your matches are saved on your phone.

What if I lose signal in the gym?

Keep tapping. Every point is saved on your phone and sent as soon as there's a signal; the pill shows how many are waiting, like Offline · 3 to send. Family sees Delayed after 2 minutes without news, then the score catches up.

I joined in set 3. Can I still score?

Yes. Tap Set the score, type the scores of sets 1 and 2 (or just pick who won them), choose set 3 and type its score now, then tap Save & resume set 3.

Can I fix a set after it ended?

While the match is going, yes: open the menu, tap Catch up / edit sets and change any finished set. Family sees “Score corrected” with the time. Once you've tapped Finish match, a volleyball score can't be changed.

Can someone else take over scoring?

Yes, with your scorer link (Copy my scorer link on the Share screen). They open it on their phone with a signal and carry on, and your phone shows Scoring moved to another phone. Send it only to the person taking over: anyone with it can change the score.

Can people we didn't invite find the live page?

Each match gets its own random link, and live pages are hidden from search engines. Only people you send the link to can watch, and only someone with the scorer link can change the score.

How long does the live page stay up?

Until 30 days after the last change to the score. A match nobody scored is removed after 48 hours. After that the link shows “This event isn't available.”

Can I delete the match?

Yes, any time you have a signal: Delete event in the match menu, or the trash button on the match in your list on the app's home screen (that's how you delete a finished one). It's removed from the server and from your phone, and the link stops working.
